LEAGUE OF THE MIGHTY

In October 2024, the Ukrainian Association of Football, in collaboration with the UAF Foundation, launched the social initiative "League of the Mighty", dedicated to the development of amputee football in Ukraine. This initiative aims not only to promote amputee football as a separate sport but also to help people with limb amputations find new meaning in life through sports.

Amputee football is more than just a game. It is an adapted form of football in which players with limb amputations or functional impairments of one limb participate. Goalkeepers play without one arm, while field players use crutches. This sport not only helps participants maintain physical fitness but also opens new opportunities—from social integration to community building, where everyone feels valued.

The project sets ambitious goals, including: integrating people with amputations into sports, promoting amputee football as an independent sport, establishing amputee football centers across Ukrainian cities, creating an active community of athletes, organizing amateur and official competitions. For many, this is a chance to return to an active life and find support among like-minded individuals.

According to the Superhumans Center, around 150,000 people in Ukraine live with limb amputations. A significant number of them are former military personnel who lost limbs during the war. For them, amputee football becomes a path to recovery—not just physically but also mentally.

"In Ukraine, there are more than 100,000 people with amputations who need to learn to live in a new way. I am confident that football can help in physical rehabilitation and speed up the return to active life. This is one of UAF’s key priorities this year.
'League of the Mighty' proves that in football, there are no limits when there is determination and team support."
— Andriy Shevchenko, UAF President
