On January 11–12, 2025, Kyiv hosted Ukraine's first-ever amputee football tournament for amateur teams – the "Winter League of the Mighty Cup." This event became a significant part of the large-scale social project "League of the Mighty," initiated by the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) and the UAF Foundation. The initiative aims to promote amputee football, develop inclusive sports, and create opportunities for the rehabilitation of individuals with limb amputations.
The tournament marked a milestone for Ukrainian sports, laying the foundation for a comprehensive system of amputee football competitions.
Most participants were veterans for whom football is an essential part of physical and psychological rehabilitation. For many this tournament was their first experience of official matches, first goals, and first victories.
Amputee football carries a unique mission: helping people with amputations return to active life, find inspiration through sports, and overcome life’s challenges. The event also highlighted football’s powerful role in rehabilitation, especially for military personnel injured while defending Ukraine.
The tournament featured the country’s top amputee football teams. Over five rounds of intense competition, strong and ambitious players demonstrated incredible skill and an unwavering will to win.
The winner of the "Winter League of the Mighty Cup 2025" was the team FC "Pokrova AMP-2," which defeated AMP FC "Kyiv" in the final with a score of 1:0.
The organization of the tournament was made possible thanks to the support of socially responsible businesses, including brands like adidas and "Lvivske," the media partner ICTV2, the broadcaster of the final match UPL TV, and FC "Dynamo" (Kyiv), which provided the venue for the competition.
The "Winter League of the Mighty Cup" is more than just a competition – it is a symbol of resilience and strength of spirit. The tournament became a platform for the social integration of people with limb amputations, helped promote amputee football in Ukraine, and drew attention to the importance of sports as a tool for rehabilitation.
The event received coverage from leading Ukrainian and international media, including 1+1, Suspilne, Inter, ICTV, Tribuna, Ukrainian Football, Ukrinform, United24, Corriere dello Sport, Channel 24, Euronews, Associated Press, and others.
This media support has allowed more people to learn about this important initiative and inspired new achievements. Together, we are building an inclusive society where everyone can find their place and prove that human potential is limitless.
